History of the Minimumweight Division
Minimumweight (also called Strawweight or Mini Flyweight) was officially recognised by the WBC in 1987 and the IBF in 1988, making it the youngest of the 17 men's professional divisions.
The class is dominated historically by fighters from Asia and Latin America, where smaller body frames are more common in the talent pool.
Despite being the lightest class, minimumweight champions are known for blistering hand speed and high punch volume.
Weight Cut Tips for Minimumweight
At 105 lbs the margin is razor thin — most pros walk around within 5–8 lbs of the limit and rely on careful hydration and small daily weigh-ins rather than dramatic cuts.
